My Kefir Adventure

I acquired some Kefir grains from my sister this week and quickly made Milk Kefir. Milk Kefir is a cultured milk, similar to yogurt, but uses different cultures. Its apparently really good for you! It also tastes different to yogurt (its an acquired taste). It much easier to make then yogurt (and I think yogurt is easy to make!).

There are lots of tutorials on the internet for making Kefir. You can find the one I used here. If you would like some grains you can buy them online or ask a friend who is making kefir for some.

Here are my lovely Kefir grains full of good cultures:

Because I haven’t enjoyed drinking the Kefir straight, here are two things I have done with it (that even my husband has enjoyed):

Kefir Banana Smoothies:

To make this, I simply blended one banana, a teaspoon of cinnamon, a teaspoon of rice malt syrup (optional), and about a cup of kefir and a cup of milk (or you can add the milk and kefir to taste). Yum!

Kefir Salad Dressing:

This is the same recipe as my yogurt dressing but insert kefir instead of yogurt.

-1 cup of Kefir Milk

-1 tablespoon of lemon juice

-2 tablespoons of chives

-1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard

Shake all the ingredients in together and serve with salad!

My son licked the dressing off the carrot before eating it!

If you have a good way to use Kefir, I would love to hear about it. I am looking for lots of ideas to use it!

My next thought is to try out some Kefir and fruit ice-poles…so watch this space.
